Going to the Doctor

Today I went to the doctor to get a physical. I suppose it's fairly routine, and it would have been, except for the strange behavior I experienced there. Herewith: first the Medical Assistant took my vitals, let me empty my pockets before she weighed me (ha, thanks!), and then ushered me to the exam room, where she handed me a johnny.

When money won't fix it

There is a big open question hovering over the Gulf oil spill. In statements of victims and observers alike, we detect the roaring emptiness of a question no one is asking, because to ask it risks breaking the whole system.

The question is this: How are reparations computed when the damages can't be defined in monetary terms? What is the value of miles of pristine beaches, grassy coastal inlets, populated by birds, turtles, oysters, shrimp, and fish, with the occasional fishing boat plying out to the rich offshore fishing grounds?

New look

Yes, dear reader, the Random Mutters blog looks different. Blogger has some new features to change appearance, including a new themes mechanism with adjustable column widths, and more of the site-design elements are exposed in a graphical menuing system. (Parenthetically, all this new power seems to be written in Flash, as a direct rebuke to Steve Jobs, who won't allow no Flash on his new iPad.) There's also a powerful "preview" mechanism which makes it simple and much safer to make major appearance changes. If you're hosting a blog with Blogger, I recommend the simple upgrade (there's no word whether it's reversible... my guess is no). And I think it makes my blog look much better. Think of it as a starlet's facelift, but cheap and safe and partially reversible. Now, I just have to fix the font on the Blog title. I'm working on that.
