Thoughts on surveys

I had a thought that's been germinating for awhile in my itty-bitty mind. Never, ever tell the truth to telephone surveys! No matter what! Lie to them. Don't answer online surveys truthfully either. They're worse than the telephone surveys. If an online survey is pissing you off (I'm talking to you Washington Post!) just tell them you're a 12 year old girl. The survey magically disappears and they say thank you.

Anatomy of a news story: in news drought CNN reports what "could" happen

I woke up this morning (as always) listening to the BBC news on public radio, where just before 5:30 am I heard a story about a purported threat against the creators of South Park by muslim extremists. Wow!

I got up, went directly to Google News and there was the story at the top left. Click-click... there I'm now an expert. Apparently one of the crack reporters at CNN found a post on the website of Revolution Muslim (I'm not going to give them the compliment of linking them from here-- Google for it if you want to check it out yourself), that says (and I quote from a quote on CNN)

The pathetic half-truth, half fantasy of Sarah Palin's governmancy

Sarah Palin quit being governor of Alaska in the middle of her first term, in order to pursue a career in show business. She dumped the Alaskan voters like a starlet dumps her small town agent as soon as he lands her a plum gig in the big city. "Sorry babe, it was great while it lasted, and I'll never forget our good times, but I've moved on to bigger things now..." Wasilla isn't big enough for the barracuda.

Washington Post gets it dead wrong!

I read a story in the Washington Post online tonight, that President Obama has ordered his HHS Secretary to draw up rules ordering hospitals to grant visitation rights to same sex partners. This addresses an incredibly sad situation-- where one member of a couple of long-standing is not allowed to visit, or worse, to manage the medical affairs of, a medically incapacitated partner because of prejudice and insensitivity on the part of hospital boards, administrators, or staff. Baby, we're all getting older, and even today-- well into the twenty-first century-- there are still those among us who are not allowed to spend their last moments together, and all because of some cold and heartless policy enacted by administrators at a hospital. It makes me too sad to even feel anger.

Sarah Palin displays true face in grimace of insatiable feral greed

The University of California is crumbling. Next fall the state institutes tuition increases of 30% and more. Thousands of teachers were laid off, projects stopped, research interrupted. These are tough times.

Except apparently for the greed-capitalists, drill-baby-drill populists, and Halliburton-Republicans, whose doyenne, Ms. Sarah Palin, has contracted with the California education system for first class airfare, deluxe hotel suites, a Lear Jet, and bendable straws.

Money princes prove to be far worse than predicted

In a recent post here, I railed against the shady behavior of Lehman Bros. before they were so rudely flushed down the economic sewer by the recent collapse of our US real estate bubble. The single quote in that post was from the New York Times, talking about how the other big banks categorically denied using shady accounting tactics to manipulate their apparent financial health.

Medical Breakthrough announced right here on this blog!

I read with interest about an emerging medical condition, reported today in the New York Times, that involves people getting up in the middle of the night and binging on junk food in their kitchens. Some do it several time a night, and they often don't remember-- their only hints in the morning are a full feeling, crumbs in the bed and/or wrappers in the wastebaskets. Oh, and weight gain and all the various maladies associated with overeating and obesity. "Honey, where are the HoHo's?"

The most evil man in America

Could Don Blankenship be the most evil man in the USA? He's head of the National Chamber of Commerce, he thinks people who believe there's a problem with Global Warming are "crazy," and he runs the company-- Massey Energy-- that, while receiving thousands of major safety citations from the national mining safety regulators, and tripling the output of at least one of his mines, managed to kill 25 miners at work a couple of days ago from an explosion of methane gas, which incidentally they had been cited for dozens of times in the last year.

Foxnews lies in headlines

I have noticed something recently-- that Foxnews says one thing in their headlines and another in the story that accompanies the headline. I know the yahoos who read Foxnews are not sticklers for details, and probably most won't bother to try and trudge in through all that small type made into words and syntax and everything to try and actually read the story, so Foxnews feels obligated to (and is doing a favor for) its audience by not only distilling down the subject of the news story in the headline but also by supplying a canned judgment of it (or a disdainful rejection of any lesson from the actual facts of the story).

WikiLeaks releases horrible video

What if you told the people you were fighting a glorious war to defend Freedom and Democracy and to protect our Homeland from Terrorists? That would be a good thing, right?

But then, what if it turned out the glorious war was really just slap-happy kid soldiers with a whole lot of ordinance shooting up poor people in poor foreign slums with little control and no accountability?
