CNN is running an article today that is so close to completely fabricated it almost glows with dishonesty.
CNN reports Al Qaeda in Iraq seems to have moved out, leaving their abandoned bunkers of death, and have now moved back into Afghanistan to consolidate their positions. The story is backed up with actual photos, like the abandoned German defenses in France. Except there's nothing true about it. It's a fantasy the government and military (our's!) have had to manufacture in order to justify sending all those troops into harm's way. Al Qaeda in Iraq isn't the same as Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, and is probably not the same as Osama's despicable band of murderous retards, also called Al Qaeda, either. The Taliban in Eastern Afghanistan isn't the same as the one in Western Pakistan. I believe they're more like a bunch of disconnected and mostly hapless peasants packing heat who hate Westerners because they kill and maim the peasants and arm their enemies the warlords. There's no "war" because the only enemy are farmers and peasants with AK-47's trying to defend themselves from their government, the warlords all around, and oh yeah, the US and NATO military.
Iraq is an invented war, based on lies from the beginning. Afghanistan is an invented war, based on a naive and paranoid view of the world by the Bush administration. Both wars require invented enemies, because neither Iraq nor Afghanistan poses any risk to us. CNN is helping in that effort, as are most all the major news outlets. It's despicable.
