Opinion One keeps calling me!

Who are these toads? Twice in the last week I've gotten calls from some sketchy organization that identifies itself in their Caller ID as Opinion One. They have a recorded message that basically instructs you to press #1 for a message, and then they warn you about gun control or promote capitalism (Promote capitalism? Does it need defending?). Then they hang up. It's weird.

So I did a little googling, and found they've been the target of numerous complaints, they don't honor the national Do Not Call database, they call all over the country, using various phone numbers, and have been doing this since at least February of this year. They also have a website which doesn't seem to be running quite yet.

I believe, since they're collecting key presses, there's some sort of polling going on-- they're probably getting paid by someone for some reason or another, though I can't imagine how anyone seriously concerned with gathering statistics could use such haphazardly collected data-- the population is "the random phone number where a person is home or available to their cell phone before 5:00 pm, and will answer their phone despite the evasive caller id, and will respond to a forceful white-inflected voice telling you to press a number if you feel a certain way." That could almost be random! It's innocuous, but the outcome is almost certainly useful to someone. Is this a new kind of right-wing opinion survey where instead of finding out your opinion they assert theirs?

As for the name of the company, the name Opinion One seems apt, since they're clearly not interested in any opinion besides the one they already hold. Why do I think someone like Karl Rove (or Dick Cheney) is behind this? How does one go about getting the Do Not Call registry enforced? Stop calling me, toads! You've already lost! Go back to Mississippi and count your money and shut up!
